Shantanu, you have superbly articulated the thoughts and it was enjoyable as well as a learning for me . Having lived through the 90s , can relate to your points on movies then and how tastes evolve . For me it's an ongoing battle between heart and head, where heart says Tiger 3 and Head says Railway Men . And brilliant take on Animal - it's truly exploited what the prevailing conditions are .
Thanks, Swapneel. A healthy fight between heart and head is perfectly fine. And one can always win over the other, or at best stay in healthy competition throughout - like it’s always been for us. It keeps things balanced. But neither heart nor head wins , or should win, when things become toxic, as in the case of Animal. Movies like these should just be condemned, not condoned.
Thank you for this article ; I feel cinema should be about entertainment and in that sense when we think of the black and white era , both here and in Hollywood , it was a magical experience and something that lives on in my memory ! Even today I prefer seeing an older film to get a smile or shed a few tears , I am not able to get that with today’s cinema !!
Yes, fully agree. Life too was much simpler then, that it allowed movies to have simple stories, told in a simple manner, by directors and actors who were simple people.
Another gem of a piece. Reliving our movie preferences - we all cringed even then at some of the tropes, but that was sometimes the point of watching those movies.
The “vitriolic half knowledge” takes in extremes on both sides not just conservatives. Half wits being given an outsized voice due to technology may be bad in the short term, but we have to perhaps give it a chance. It does unlock the potential for the average person to discover science, literature, music and other amazing stuff now that was never possible before.
Thanks man ... maybe you have a point there when you say half wits need to be given a chance ... my problem is that the world seems to be increasingly and overwhelmingly populated only by them ... hahahahaha
